One Desk, Four Stylish Workspaces You Can Create

We’re moving our work area into the new office/playroom/guest room, so I decided to give my old workspace one last hoorah with a four-part desk makeover—just for fun. I used only items I already owned, so the only rule was no spending a dime. The goal was to explore different looks and functions for my modest parsons desk and see how simple swaps could change both the style and usefulness of the space.

Current desk view

Below are four distinct arrangements I tried, each addressing basic desk needs—storage, writing tools, a drink spot, and a few cheerful accessories—while demonstrating different decorating directions.

Arrangement One: Bright Spring Color

Spring colored desk

For this version I leaned into fresh, cheery hues. A small potted plant in a turquoise ceramic pot added life, while a pink vase of pencils and a little blue ceramic fish brought playful color. Brightly colored books sat on top of simple storage boxes, finished with a cardboard rhino for a touch of whimsy. A colorful coaster, a handy notebook, a bright pen and green mini scissors rounded out the functional pieces.

Spring desk accessories

This setup supplies:

  • A protected spot for a cold drink so condensation won’t ruin paperwork
  • A notebook, pen and small scissors within arm’s reach
  • Cheerful desk accessories that boost mood
  • A plant for a calming focal point when stepping away from the screen
  • An open vessel for corralling pens and pencils

Arrangement Two: Chic Metallics and Concealed Storage

Metallics desk

This iteration emphasized hidden storage and a layered metallic look. Two capiz boxes, three gold cubes and glass votives holding paperclips and staples kept clutter out of sight. I added reading glasses, a notebook, a vanilla-scented candle and a DIY reed diffuser for a clean, subtle fragrance. A few ceramic birds provided a playful touch.

Storage boxes and candle

This setup supplies:

  • Multiple boxes to hide bills, receipts and loose paper
  • A notebook and basic supplies at hand
  • A flame-free, natural scent from a DIY diffuser and a soy candle for ambiance
  • A streamlined, slightly glamorous look that still functions well

Arrangement Three: Beachy Accents

Beachy desk

This version leans into coastal details. A blue vase with dried hydrangeas, a faux clam shell used as a catchall, a shell ball, faux coral, and sea-glass votives bring ocean vibes. Blue books and a blue glass cup of pencils keep the color story cohesive, while a faux urchin and starfish add texture and interest.

The little faux clam shell ended up holding paperclips, reading glasses and a pen — a cute and practical touch.

Beach themed desk details

This setup supplies:

  • A large capiz box to conceal paperwork
  • A notebook, paperclips and glasses within reach
  • Two small candles for a relaxed atmosphere
  • A glass cup to hold pens or pencils

Arrangement Four: Natural Textures

Natural texture desk

The fourth look focuses on earthy, textured elements. An easy-care plant in a textured planter brings greenery and air-purifying benefits. A woven cup holds pencils, and a large frame with a burlap mat layers with a round capiz mat for visual interest. I included a leather journal and a ceramic egg crate (repurposed as an office supply caddy) to corral small items like paperclips, push pins, staples and stamps. Four wooden block letters spelling “love” add a personal touch.

Egg crate organizer

This setup supplies:

  • A visually calming, air-cleansing houseplant
  • An attractive, functional egg crate turned supply organizer
  • A nearby journal for jotting notes
  • A woven cup for pens and pencils
  • Framed photos for a morale boost

Final natural desk

One desk, four looks—each meeting basic blogging and bill-paying needs while offering a different mood. These setups might not suit someone who needs wide surface area for large projects, but for a small corner desk, they’re great ways to mix function and style without buying anything new.

Which setup do you prefer: the punchy spring version, the understated metallics, the beachy vignette, or the natural/textural arrangement? What’s your must-have home office item—something practical or a little charm that makes you smile when you sit down to work? I’d love to hear what you keep on your desk.
