Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge: Vintage Finds & Style Tips

The day has finally come — it’s thrift-shopping time! We created this “Challenge” last Friday as an excuse to hit the thrift stores together (virtually) and show off our finds. There was also a playful scavenger-hunt twist. Like our Pinterest Challenges, anyone who wants to share their thrifted treasures can add a link at the bottom of this post.

We asked participants to follow three simple steps (four if you count blogging about it — but you can join even without a blog):

Step 1: Go to a thrift shop with “$20 in your pocket” and take a photo of yourself or your receipt.

Step 2: Spend your $20 however you like and photograph your haul. Your finds can be home-related, fashion, kids’ items, or anything else. You don’t have to upcycle them, although that’s welcome. Here’s what our $20 scored:

  • Wooden doll’s cradle: $11
  • Woven doll’s chair: $5
  • Aladdin book (picked by Clara): $0.65
  • Wooden flower wall hanging: $1
  • Total: $17.65

I painted the small wooden wall hanging white and added it to Clara’s frame wall — just two small finish nails hold it up. It’s a quick, sweet touch.

I’m planning to spray-paint the woven chair (I’m thinking glossy red) but haven’t had the time yet. Even unrefreshed, it’s already a hit with the dolls.

The cradle is the star find. Clara is overjoyed — she tucks her dolls in and plays pretend mommy. First comes the hug…

…then the kiss…

…they get tucked under the blanket…

…and another kiss for good measure.

It’s pretty much the cutest thing. I plan to prime and paint the cradle a bright color (maybe yellow), sew a cushion for the base, and possibly make a small quilt like one I made previously. I’m even picturing a tiny fabric banner to drape over the crib’s headboard. In short: this little cradle is due for a makeover.

For now Clara is thrilled. She loves playing mommy — rocking and tucking in her dolls ranks high on her list, alongside changing diapers. Occasionally she pretends Burger is a baby, though he has wisely avoided both the cradle and diaper duty so far.

Step 3: Find an item mentioned in the song and snap a photo. That’s the scavenger-hunt twist — bonus points if you stage something silly or over-the-top with the item. Macklemore’s confidence in those footy pajamas is a great reference point.

Now it’s your turn. We’d love to see what Macklemore-inspired thrift-store treasures you dug up over the past week. If you’ve already blogged about your finds, please add your post to the link tool at the bottom of this page by following these steps:

  1. Click the blue “Add Your Link” button near the bottom of this post (you may need to scroll).
  2. Paste the direct URL to your specific blog post (not your homepage).
  3. In the “name” field, write a short description of your bounty (for example: “Best Purse Ever,” “Giant Frame,” or “Kitchen Finds”).
  4. If you can, please link back to this page so readers can hop between posts.

If you don’t have a blog, you can post your photos in the comments or share them via a public photo gallery (Flickr, etc.) and leave that link in the comments. We’re excited to see what everyone found — happy thrifting!
