Today we’re sharing a small space challenge at the duplex and would love to hear which rental option your family would choose. We’ll also tell the story of an unexpected Christmas request from our daughter that sent us on a search for a house-related gift, and how we discovered a handy 4-in-1 tool that’s perfect for the junk drawer. Plus we tackle fun questions like whether your astrological sign can actually influence your home decor.

What’s New

- That’s the dollhouse we built back in 2012 for our daughter when she was two. We’ve shared a step-by-step tutorial on constructing the dollhouse and a follow-up on finishing and decorating it.
- As shown in this post, it lived in our daughter’s closet until last year when she turned seven and asked for a desk instead, so we swapped it out for the new piece she wanted: her desk.

- We found a couple of intricate, vintage dollhouses that are tucked away in the attic until Christmas morning. Sherry snuck a photo of the smaller of the two — it’s a fixer-upper but a great find for $20, with arched windows, roof shingles, and a staircase waiting to be restored. On the to-do list: working lights and a frosted pantry door.

- We also compiled a few older podcast episodes you might enjoy while we take some time off:
- Episode #12: Rapping with Flipping Out’s Jenni Pulos
- Episode #14: What Quitting Our Blog Taught Us
- Episode #36: Reflections on Rejection with Joy Cho of Oh Joy!
- Episode #39: House Cleaning Hacks From a Pro
- Episode #60: Organization Tips From The Home Edit
- Episode #87: Lessons From The Set of Hoarders
- We also mentioned Domino’s feature on How To Design Your Home Based On Your Astrological Sign. Let us know if your sign’s style rings true.
- Sherry referred to an older episode where she talks about her love of rocks and crystals — you can find that episode here.
We’re Digging

- Sherry tried a 4-in-1 Patch Plus Primer on our living room wall to fill multiple small nail holes. It worked really well for those minor touch-ups and was convenient because it combines several steps into one product.
- For larger repairs, we still recommend a traditional spackle tub and putty knife, but for quick fixes this $7 solution felt like a smart, inexpensive option.
- Also on our radar: a recent murder-thriller I finished and added to our Book Club page. It’s Paula Hawkins’ follow-up to The Girl On The Train — an unexpected but enjoyable read. If you’re curious about books we’ve loved, check out our Book Club page to see past picks.
If you want to find things we’ve recommended in previous episodes but don’t remember where they were mentioned, here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from past shows.
Finally, a big thank you to The Citizenry for sponsoring this episode. You can view their artisan-made pieces at CitizenryPodcast.com/YHL and use the code YHL to receive $50 toward your first purchase of $200 or more.
