When Cindy reached out to collaborate on a giveaway for her eco-conscious store, we had no idea the generosity would continue long after one lucky reader won a party pack. Cindy invited us to tour her beautiful, environmentally minded mid-century rancher in Richmond, and we were thrilled to accept. Meet Cindy, her husband Robert, and their vibrant, thoughtfully updated home:

We never know exactly what to expect when we go house crashing. Often we discover a home through a friend of the homeowner — and that’s exactly how this visit happened. As we approached the front walkway, we were immediately smitten by the cheerful entry: a punchy turquoise door that opens into a bright pink living room. Robert painted the room himself, which felt like the perfect personal touch.

Every corner of the house blends local art, clean-lined furnishings, and joyful color to create a modern yet inviting atmosphere. Many choices prioritize health and sustainability — from the no-VOC paint to thoughtfully sourced secondhand pieces, like the recovered blue chair — while still delivering a polished, luxurious look.

Cindy uses twinkling white lights in the pink living room to create a soft, magical glow that draws you inside. A simple Ikea table lamp pairs with an eclectic mix of old and new items. The back of a built-in nook is lined with reflective wallpaper to amplify the light and add a playful shimmer.

Beyond the sunny living room sits a dining area with a moodier, more intimate feel. We loved the Moroccan-inspired lanterns and the modern ghost chairs that lend an unexpected mix of textures and styles.

The dining room’s built-ins are another highlight: crafted from sustainable wood and made without VOCs or formaldehyde, they include a clever wine chiller integrated at one end. It’s a practical, elegant solution that demonstrates how eco-friendly materials can be both beautiful and functional.

Cindy and Robert added a modest but well-considered green addition when the original kitchen felt too small. They avoided building more space than necessary and focused on efficient, sustainable choices: cork flooring, recycled-glass backsplash and countertops, and Energy Star appliances. Finding contractors experienced with eco materials proved challenging, so much of the research and coordination fell to them — time-consuming but ultimately rewarding work that paid off in a kitchen that’s both stylish and sustainable.

The pantry is a dream: floor-to-ceiling doors that resemble a large armoire hide abundant storage next to a substantial island. It’s a smart, streamlined solution that keeps clutter out of sight while maximizing function.

The dining area charmed us with a white ceramic antler chandelier and a rustic-modern wood table that balances whimsy and sophistication. Cindy also shared a fun cork-floor anecdote: dropping a knife sometimes results in it sticking into the floor like a dart. The cork then self-heals, leaving no lasting mark — a quirky perk of a resilient, natural surface.

Color plays a thoughtful role throughout the home. The pink living room felt unexpectedly relaxing, while a vivid green bathroom brought a cheerful energy. Cindy layers hues so rooms look intentional both on their own and in sightlines from adjacent spaces — the green beyond the inky blue bedroom feels cohesive and deliberate, highlighted by crisp white trim and furnishings.

One of our favorite rooms is the eco-conscious bathroom Cindy and Robert designed. Recycled tile, sustainable wood built-ins, a cleverly integrated pull-out trash can, and salvaged kitchen countertop slabs reused as surfaces all showcase a commitment to reducing waste without compromising design. The result feels purposeful, luxurious, and thoroughly well-executed.

So, what do you think? Was that a fun little house-crashing session? Which room or detail caught your eye? We’d love to hear your favorites and any design elements you’d borrow for your own home.
