Coming off the heels of our own stenciling adventures, we had to share Ginny’s dining nook makeover. After she finished, she joked that her hand looked clawed from tracing and painting the stencil—sound familiar to anyone who’s labored through a DIY project? Here’s Ginny’s account of how she transformed an overlooked corner into a vibrant dining space:

I wanted to create a dining corner in my living room. I’d bought the table, finally found the chairs I wanted, and tried to style the area, but it still felt like a table stuck in a corner rather than a real dining space. The missing ingredient was color. I wanted that color to relate to the living room, so I chose a green that echoed the carpet and brought the area to life.

I found inspiration in a blog post that showed a stencil technique and then followed that blogger’s link to another tutorial with step-by-step instructions. That’s the beauty of the online DIY community: ideas evolve and travel from site to site. I cut a template, traced the pattern on the wall—an effort that took about 4.5 hours and left my hands sore the next day—and then painted the design, which took even longer. It was time-consuming, but worth every minute.

Now I’m absolutely, positively head over heels in love with my dining room! — Ginny

Thanks for sharing your project, Ginny. The dramatic color and pattern turned an ordinary corner into a bold focal point that complements the adjoining living room. Her post includes more project details and photos for those who want to replicate the look.
Feeling inspired to try a similar stencil or color palette in your own dining area—or elsewhere in the house? Give it a shot. Just know it can be a labor of love: tracing and painting a repeat pattern takes patience, but the payoff is a space that feels intentional and unique.
