Charming Red, White & Teal Bunkroom Designed for Four Girls

Projects like Shannon’s almost make you wish you had four daughters running around. I say “almost” — but once you see what she tackled, you’ll understand why the idea sounds pretty appealing (and that’s coming from someone who grew up with three sisters).

Hey guys! It’s so funny reading your blog. We were and are where you guys are — we started almost ten years ago when we bought our first house. Since then we’ve grown our family to five kids (yup, five!) and we’re still in the same house, doing our best to make it work. With the birth of our fifth child — our fourth daughter — last May, we had to rethink how to arrange the kids across three bedrooms. Initial plans were 2 girls / 2 girls / 1 boy, but then we discovered the double bunk room over at augustfields.blogspot.com and fell in love. So last month the mister took the week between Christmas and New Year’s and we dove into a major renovation.

In ten days we removed a wall, combined two rooms into one, built a double bunk bed unit, and finished the room — if not completely, at least enough to be functional. And we did it all on a very tight budget. SUPER, super cheap.

Creating hidden storage, like pull-out drawers on casters, has been a lifesaver for maximizing space.

I made silhouette pillows for each girl to add a personal touch to their beds.

We painted a playful striped ceiling for a bold splash of color and personality in the room.

Affordable dressers (three IKEA Malm units) paired with turquoise walls keep the space bright, playful, and functional.

The girls love the new room, and so do we.

Thanks for checking it out! — xoxo, Shannon

This project is a great example of how smart planning and creative DIY solutions can transform space without breaking the bank. A big thanks and bravo to Shannon and her mister for sharing their makeover. If you want more photos and the full story, visit Shannon’s blog to see the inspiration, progress, and reveal photos. And while you’re looking, play along: what’s your favorite part? Personally, I’m loving the built-in drawer storage, and Sherry can’t stop talking about the striped ceiling.
