How I Got a Free Dishwasher: Step-by-Step Guide

If you remember, we finished our previous post by mentioning that we eventually planned to buy a new washer and dryer to fit our more open laundry nook. We couldn’t resist “just looking,” though — and a quick look turned into a purchase once we saw the deals available.

We focused on the Whirlpool Duet Sport washer and dryer because of their compact footprint and quiet, efficient performance. The pair normally retailed for about $1,610, but they were on clearance for $1,480 as the store was clearing space for incoming 2008 models.

Our sales associate, Robert, told us about a promotion for 10% off all Energy Star appliances. The washer had an Energy Star label, so that discount reduced the price by roughly $75 to about $1,405. Robert also helped us open a store credit card that provided another 10% off, shaving roughly $140 more and bringing our total to $1,255.

That added up to about $355 in savings on the laundry pair. With the new credit card and the double Energy Star discount in mind, we decided to buy a dishwasher we’d been eyeing for the kitchen. We found a model for about $350 that matched our existing fridge and stove. Because it was Energy Star–rated and the purchase was made on the new credit card, the 10% discount applied twice, dropping the price to around $280 — a great value, especially when combined with the savings from the washer and dryer.

On top of those discounts, Lowe’s was offering free appliance delivery, which included installation and haul-away of our old units at no extra charge. All together, the combination of clearance pricing, Energy Star and credit-card discounts, plus free delivery and removal made this a satisfying and budget-friendly shopping trip.
