Magazine Photoshoots Hosted at Our Home: Behind-the-Scenes Guide

It’s a hectic—but delightful—day here at Casa Petersik. A photography crew from Better Homes & Gardens is on site to shoot our newly transformed nursery and our recently renovated bathroom for Kitchen + Bath Makeovers and Do It Yourself magazine. We’re thrilled to have them and can’t wait to see the final images.

It’s been fun watching the stylists work their magic—how do they make everyday bottles of soap look so appealing? We already know photographer Erik Johnson from a previous shoot; he photographed the rest of our house for a multi-issue feature in Do It Yourself. Seeing him and his team again feels like a reunion, and it’s been nice to compare notes about lighting and composition.

With my due date still a couple of weeks away, I’ve been repeating the mantra “don’t go into labor yet.” There’s no real reason to expect early labor, and we’re even betting the baby will be late, but I can’t help feeling like I need to get past this photo shoot commitment first. It’s a small, silly deadline in the back of my mind, but it matters to me.

We don’t want to miss any of the behind-the-scenes moments, and the crew has a charming attention to detail—right down to paperwork for our dog. In magazine shoots even pets need releases.

Fresh flowers also became part of the set, even though they were shooting a bathroom and a nursery. Those little touches really elevate the space and make the photos sing.

It’s always interesting to watch how the stylists tweak rooms to give them that “ready for their close-up” polish. We’ve shared behind-the-scenes tips from past shoots before, and we’ll pass along some of the tricks the team uses once this session wraps. For now, the primary objective is keeping my belly out of the frame—which is a bit of a challenge when your midsection measures about 43 inches.

But enough about us—what’s happening with you? Any plans for the weekend or projects on your to-do list?
