Our Home Through the Four Seasons: Photos and Seasonal Decor Tips

With a snowstorm dropping about nine inches of fluffy white on us this weekend — which is unusual for our area — we couldn’t help but admire how beautiful everything looked under a fresh blanket. It also made us appreciate one of the things we love about central Virginia: the chance to enjoy all four seasons. Long, pleasant springs and autumns are typical here, punctuated by the occasional snowstorm (three times with accumulation in four years — rare enough to feel special). Yes, summer humidity arrives too, but for us it’s a fair trade for seasonal variety.

We used our snow day to pull together photos of the house across the seasons. Below are a few views of the front of Casa Petersik — though we realized we don’t have a summer shot from this angle yet (one more item for the to-do list). First, here’s the house in spring (April 2009). If it looks familiar, that’s because this image is the photo used in our blog header.

Here’s the front in fall (September 2007). This older photo shows the house before several updates: we removed the yellow storm door, demoed the country-style scalloped porch header, reworked the front landscaping, painted the large gray gas tank to match the house, and completed the big front-porch makeover.

And here’s the house in winter, wearing a neat snow blanket (December 2009).

We were pleasantly surprised to find we had backyard photos from all four seasons as well. Below are views from the back patio, starting with spring (April 2009).

Here’s the yard in summer (June 2009), taken right after mowing that ridiculously green lawn.

It’s nice to have a visual record of nearly every season from the front, and every single season from the back. The images let us daydream about a snowy winter when July feels sweltering, or remember warm spring days when the yard is buried in white. How about you — do you get all four seasons where you live? Are you down under in Australia enjoying summer right now? Is there a season that makes your home look its best, or one you dread because of the extra chores it brings, like leaf raking, lawn mowing, or snow shoveling? We’d love to hear which season you favor and why.
