Cut Your Monthly Bills With Just 3 Phone Calls

As many of us look for ways to cut expenses, it’s easy to forget a simple strategy: ask. By making a few phone calls to the companies behind our three biggest monthly bills, Sherry and I were able to save $590 over the next year. Here’s what we did.

It began when our Comcast bill jumped by $30. The “triple play” promotion for internet, cable, and home phone had expired and our rate reverted to full price. We’ve been customers since 2006, so I called, explained my dissatisfaction, and asked if they could lower the bill. I also mentioned that a Verizon representative had been canvassing the neighborhood. I was transferred to the Retention Department and returned to the promotional rate for another year with very little pushback. Even better, our new monthly charge is $8 less than before. That change alone saves $456 over the year.

Riding that small victory, I called Geico to review our car insurance. We hadn’t updated our policy since 2006, so it made sense to check for savings. I asked the representative if she could help reduce our premium. My clean driving record seemed like a likely source of discounts, but the real savings came from correcting our account details: Sherry was still listed as a “friend” rather than showing our married name. Once her name was updated, our annual premium dropped by $134. A quick fix that should have been done after our wedding—lesson learned.

For a third attempt, I called about our cell phone plan. We stick with Sprint to keep a decent employer discount, so I asked if they could lower our rate. This time there wasn’t any room to move: our two‑year‑old plan is already one of the cheapest available. The call didn’t reduce our monthly bill, but I did learn we’re eligible for $300 toward new phones—useful information even if it wasn’t a direct savings.

All told, I spent about 30 minutes on the phone. That small time investment returned nearly $600 in savings for the year, simply by asking and checking account details. These kinds of calls are often worth the effort—companies frequently retain discounts for customers who speak up, correct inaccurate account information, or are open to switching promotions.

Have you negotiated bills recently? What tactics worked for you—polite persistence, price matching, or updating account info? Share your experience; I’m ready to make more calls, especially if it might get me a discount or a new phone.
