Episode 118: Tension Builds Before the White Brick Storm

Last week we finally got our brick house painted white — a huge, exciting change — but there was plenty of behind-the-scenes stress leading up to the big transformation. This week we’re sharing the realities of a major project like this: the fears we had beforehand, what came true, and what turned out to be unnecessary worry. We also chat with a special guest who won our hearts (and some of yours), talk about an Instagram hack we experienced, share our new favorite decorating show, and reveal the celebrity who finally won Sherry over.

What’s New

House exterior

  • It’s a little strange publishing this episode because a lot happened after we recorded it. Next week we’ll update you on which fears came true and which worries were for nothing. The week mostly went to plan, but we definitely encountered a few curveballs.

Painting process

  • We’re also preparing a blog post that answers common questions about painting our exterior brick: what products we used, who we hired, total cost, timeline, and more.
  • If you missed earlier conversations about this project, you can hear our initial debate in Episode #101 and our decision to move forward in Episode #105.

Painted brick closeup

  • We discussed an Instagram hack on the show — here’s a Mashable story that covers similar incidents. Also worth checking are two small shops we mentioned: Jenny’s Print Shop and KM Salvage Designs.

Ellie Interview

Ellie portrait

  • That’s Ellie, a sweet 6-year-old we met at our Richmond West Elm grand opening. She introduced herself wearing black in honor of Sherry and even recognized Sherry’s Rothy shoes from a past episode.
  • For anyone wondering, the sound machine we mentioned is the one we use throughout the beach house and recently added to our Richmond bedroom as well.
  • Below are the photos Ellie’s mom sent of her pumpkins on the porch.
  • No final word yet on whether the light magenta walls will happen — fingers crossed!

We’re Digging

  • Above is a short sneak peek (about seven minutes) of Get A Room With Carson & Thom, the design show that’s been cracking us up — especially Sherry. It’s full of humor and satisfying room reveals.
  • I’ve been revisiting the book Dear Data. It’s beautifully designed and fun to flip through or study closely. There’s also a journal version available if you’re inspired to start your own data-drawing project.

If you want to find something we’ve recommended before but can’t remember which episode, check our master list of “We’re Digging” picks. You can also see all the books we’ve shared on our Book Club page.

Finally, a big thank you to Universal Furniture for sponsoring this episode. You can enter to win $5,000 in dining room furniture at UniversalFurniture.com/YHL and get up to 15% off retail through November 12th.
