Last Halloween we found ourselves in a familiar last-minute scramble: hours before trick-or-treaters arrived, our porch still looked bare and the grocery-store pumpkins were soggy and unusable. A quick run to Michael’s saved the night — we bought two inexpensive faux pumpkins on sale and set them out with the candy.
This year I didn’t want to toss those fake pumpkins, so I decided to give them a simple makeover. Their bright orange color, while visible from the street, clashed with our brick exterior and bold red front door. Rather than buy new decor, I reached for leftover exterior paint and gave the pumpkins a soft, creamy white coat. A cream tone kept them from looking too stark while still offering a fresh, modern look.

White and neutral pumpkins are very on-trend and blend more naturally with many home façades. After painting, I added inexpensive, discounted flowers and placed the pumpkins inside petite ceramic pots in varying colors and sizes. The combination felt polished but still playful — perfect for welcoming kids on Halloween.

The whole project was fast and budget-friendly. The paint covered in a single coat, and the flowers and pots were deeply discounted, so the entire update cost under $10 and took only a few minutes to complete. That’s an easy win for anyone looking to refresh seasonal decor without spending much time or money.

We’ll probably still pick up a few real pumpkins for carving and for roasting the seeds — those are a favorite — but for porch styling I prefer the clean, neutral look. The painted pumpkins complement our red door and brick much better than their original orange did.
If you’re decorating on a budget, look for clearance seasonal items, use leftover paint, or repurpose what you already own. Small changes like painting faux decor, grouping items in mismatched containers, or adding inexpensive blooms can make a big visual impact without a big expense.
