With freshly painted neutral walls throughout our home, we’re excited to fill rooms with meaningful art. Over the coming weeks you’ll likely see several posts highlighting creative, artful finds and DIY projects.
We begin with an original piece created from one of our own photographs. During our Alaskan honeymoon in July we took many unforgettable shots, including the image below taken during a private seaplane flight to a remote volcano a few miles outside Anchorage. Yes — a volcano in Alaska.

That field of blue and black in the foreground is a glacier streaked with volcanic ash — not something you see every day. On a whim I desaturated the photo in Photoshop to see what would happen, and I immediately fell in love with the result.

We liked it so much we printed a 12″ x 12″ square at Kinko’s for ten dollars, framed it, and turned it into our first new piece of DIY wall art. To give it a personal touch we wrote “Alaska, July 2007” on the mat beneath the bottom right corner of the photo so it feels like an original keepsake. Here it is on display above Sherry’s desk:

This simple project was quick, affordable, and meaningful — a reminder that great artwork doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. A few thoughtful edits, a modest print, and a nice frame turned a vacation snapshot into a polished piece that complements our newly painted rooms. We’re looking forward to sharing more accessible DIY art ideas and discoveries as we continue to fill our home with pieces that reflect our travels and memories.
