If you’ve ever wanted to silence that inner voice saying, “A kitchen makeover? Are you crazy? You can’t afford that!” let Erin’s budget-friendly transformation be your proof that a big change doesn’t require a huge budget. Here’s her note about the project:
I wanted to share my blog post about our kitchen remodel. It’s a temporary update done as inexpensively as possible until we can afford a full gut renovation in a few years (fingers crossed!).

The largest expense was new appliances. Aside from that, we spent no more than $100 on paint, stencil supplies, and a small shelf above the microwave.

I also finished the floor by stenciling it, and I love the result! I probably wouldn’t have taken that risk if this were our forever kitchen, but because this is a temporary refresh, I went for it and I’m so glad I did.

The floor was the most tedious element of the update. We started by peeling away old linoleum to reveal the plywood subfloor, then filled holes with wood putty, sanded, primed, and painted. That work had been done for a while, but we delayed the final paint and stenciling until the rest of the kitchen was set because moving appliances and cabinets can scratch or drip paint on a newly finished floor. Waiting was worth it—there were several scuffs and a few accidental drips to address before completing the stenciling. – Erin

Another win for the transformative power of paint. Erin’s kitchen now feels fresh, bright, and modern without a full renovation. The painted brick backsplash and refinished cabinets create a dramatically different feel, and the stenciled floor ties the whole room together. For more details and step-by-step photos from Erin’s process, she has shared a full write-up on her blog.
