DIY Buffet Makeover: Stylish Ways to Transform Your Sideboard

When Lindsay sent us the “before” photos of a cabinet she completely transformed, none of us expected the dramatic change. The finished piece looks like an entirely new furniture item. Below is her note describing the process:

We love a good before-and-after, so I wanted to share the “extreme makeover” we did on a large hutch a few weekends ago. Our goal was to work with what we had, refresh the piece, and take style cues from sources like Pottery Barn and Ballard Designs—beautiful but expensive. The hutch went through a dramatic transformation (I documented the process on my blog). Hope you enjoy it! Love your site! —Lindsay

The transformation is striking: what began as a rustic, country-style hutch became a crisp, clean-lined piece by adding new doors and reframing the base. The changes are thoughtful and modern without erasing the character of the original furniture.

Beyond aesthetics, this project highlights sustainable design in a practical way—reusing and reinventing an existing piece instead of discarding it. With a bit of creativity and elbow grease, an outdated hutch can be elevated to a stylish, functional focal point in any room.

If you’re inspired by this makeover, consider these general tips when updating an old cabinet or hutch:

  • Assess structure first: repair any wobbly joints or damaged sections before cosmetic work.
  • Decide on a style direction—modern, farmhouse, transitional—and choose paint and hardware to match.
  • Replace or reface doors for a fresh, tailored look; simple trim can create a framed, custom appearance.
  • Keep one or two original elements to preserve character while making the overall piece feel intentional.
  • Use quality primer and paint for a durable finish, and consider new knobs or pulls to complete the update.

Thanks to Lindsay for sharing her photos and process. This is a great example of how resourceful refinishing can produce stunning, high-impact results without the cost of new furniture.
