How to Arrange an Asymmetrical Gallery Wall That Wows

Thanks to a few strategically placed nails, we finally got our small guest-bedroom gallery up on that previously blank wall. We were pleased with the initial result:

But as soon as the last frame went up, we knew it needed more. So, as you might expect, we made a quick trip to Target and picked up a few additional frames.

Back home, I barely had time to set my keys down before Sherry had four new frames arranged on the wall. (She confessed later that she’d made a few trial nail holes behind some of the frames to get the layout right.) The extra pieces definitely improved the overall look.

What did we put in the new frames? We stuck with the “history” theme started by the vintage Richmond map and pulled out some old family photographs for a personal touch. Here’s a close-up of the arrangement:

The two 8×10 frames hold baby portraits of Sherry and me—both classic shots with wide-open mouths. One 5×7 shows my mom walking my chubby baby self down the beach, and the other features a striking black-and-white photo of Sherry’s dad from 1964.

We’re really enjoying the expanding gallery; it adds warmth and personality to the guest room. Now we’re both eager to continue filling the wall over time, so expect more updates as the collection grows.
