The first question we always get is about our Airbnb, the Doublemint Duplex. We rent both sides: the left side and the right side, depending on your group size and preferences.

Where Is Cape Charles?

Cape Charles sits on the southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, right on the Chesapeake Bay. The Eastern Shore is a rural peninsula separated from mainland Virginia by the bay. The historic core of Cape Charles is compact — roughly a six-by-six-block square — on the peninsula’s western shore, which means you can watch sunsets over calm bay waters from the beach.

It’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Richmond, including a scenic crossing of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. From Washington DC it’s roughly four hours via Maryland, and the closest major airport is Norfolk International Airport, about 45 minutes across the bridge-tunnel.

Once a relatively unknown town, Cape Charles has been experiencing a gentle renaissance over the past decade. Historic homes are being restored, new restaurants and shops are opening, and the town’s charm is being rediscovered. Many of the restored houses are over a century old, and the historic district is a lovely place to stay if you want walkable access to the beach, parks, and restaurants.

The Beach

The beach is the town’s biggest draw and the reason we fell for Cape Charles. It’s uncrowded, easy to access, and calm because it faces the Chesapeake Bay rather than the open Atlantic. The water is shallow for quite a distance, which makes it ideal for families.

At high tide you can walk dozens of yards and still only be waist-deep in many spots, and at low tide you can sit with your chair in the water to keep cool. Kids can safely splash and hunt for hermit crabs without the worry of big waves or dangerous currents. We’ve spent countless hours there with floats, sand buckets, and snacks.

If you want more activity, the bay is great for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, jet skiing, and boating. On windy days you’ll also spot kiteboarders. Rentals and guided outings are available locally for those without their own equipment.

Parking along Bay Avenue is free and usually plentiful, even on summer weekends, which is a real perk. There are public restrooms and outdoor showers near the big LOVE sign at Mason Ave & Bay Ave. In summer you’ll often find a taco truck or an Italian ice stand nearby.

Where To Stay

Cape Charles offers a variety of places to stay for different budgets and trip lengths. Vacation rentals on platforms like HomeAway and Airbnb are common and can be great for week-long stays, but double-check whether a listing is inside the historic district if you want true walkability to shops and the beach.

There are several charming bed & breakfasts, including Bay Haven Inn, Cape Charles House, and Alyssa House, each full of historic character. For hotel options, Hotel Cape Charles offers modern loft-style rooms with exposed brick and reclaimed wood, plus guest perks like golf carts and bikes. The Northampton Hotel, closer to the water, has a restored historic feel with a welcoming porch and waterfront views.

If you prefer camping, Kiptopeke State Park and nearby campgrounds offer waterfront sites, cabins, and uncommon options like yurts. Those spots give beach access without being in the historic district, but the short drive into town is worth it for restaurants and shops.

Where To Eat

The dining scene is still growing, but there are reliably good options concentrated along Mason Avenue and nearby marinas. Our favorite casual spot is Shanty, a waterfront seafood restaurant with fresh fish, oysters, and kid-friendly options. It’s a great place to watch the sunset, and they often have live music in summer. If you want to avoid a long wait, go early or add your name to the waitlist and explore town while you wait.

Deadrise Pies, run by the same team, is our go-to for pizza and Italian dishes — perfect for takeout to the beach at sunset. Cape Charles Brewing Company offers family-friendly dining, outdoor seating, and craft beer in a relaxed setting. Other spots include Kelly’s Gingernut Pub, Hook-U Up, and The Oyster Farm for more upscale meals.

For breakfast and coffee, check Cape Charles Coffee House or the Northampton Hotel’s café. Rayfield’s soda fountain offers a casual, nostalgic option. Lunchtime choices include Gourmet Alley and Tim’s Place, and new bakeries have been opening recently, which is always exciting.

Where To Treat Yourself

Dessert is a highlight in town. Brown Dog Ice Cream is a local favorite with creative rotating flavors and was once named among TripAdvisor’s top ice creams in the country. You can get cones, milkshakes, floats, or sandwiches featuring their inventive flavors.

Cape Charles Brewing Company serves food alongside beer, Buskey Cider on the Bay offers outdoor games and a relaxed patio, and Cape Charles Distillery focuses on spirits. Nearby Chatham Vineyards hosts tastings and a unique “Paddle Your Glass Off” tour that combines kayaking and wine sampling.

When To Visit

Summer is peak season and the best time to enjoy beach activities, live music, and full business hours. However, spring, fall, and the holiday season each have their charm. We’ve had beach days in April and as late as November. The town hosts events year-round — garden tours, holiday main street celebrations, seasonal concerts, and quirky traditions like a New Year’s Eve crab pot drop.

Keep in mind that off-season hours can vary and some restaurants and shops close seasonally, so call ahead if you’re planning a trip outside summer. January through March are the quietest months, which can be perfect if you want solitude and a slower pace.
