This year we’re sharing a handful of budget-friendly DIY holiday gift ideas, but one $10 project deserves special attention because it needs a few weeks to develop. Don’t worry — setup takes barely a minute, and then the bulbs do the rest. After that quick start, your job is done and you can enjoy the results.
The project: a simple, elegant vase of fragrant paperwhites (Narcissus). Planted in a clear glass vase with a layer of river rocks and about an inch of water, they produce beautiful blooms that brighten the holiday season. Whether you want to make one for a parent, a neighbor, a friend, or yourself, this short tutorial will get you there.
Step 1: Gather materials. Buy 3–5 paperwhite bulbs, often labeled Narcissus (we found a box of four for $5), some river rocks (approx. $2), and a clear glass vase at least three inches deep and five inches wide (approx. $3). Total cost: about $10. The payoff: flowers in winter that look and smell lovely.

Step 2: Create the base. Pour about half of the river rocks into the bottom of the vase. This creates a stable bed that elevates the bulbs one to two inches so their roots have space to grow.

Step 3: Position the bulbs. Nestle the bulbs on the rock bed and wiggle them slightly so they stand upright. If a bulb tips, reposition rocks beneath it for support. Make sure bulbs remain elevated and not pressed against the vase bottom — roots need room. Add the remaining rocks around the bulbs to hold them snugly in place.

Step 4: Add water carefully. The bulb tops should remain exposed — don’t bury them. Add just enough water so the base of each bulb, where tiny roots will form, is barely submerged. The water level should touch only the very bottom of the bulbs while the rest of the bulb sits above the water on the rocks.

Step 5: Wait and enjoy. Keep the water level consistent and place the vase in a bright, sunny spot. Over the next three to four weeks the shoots will grow and eventually produce fragrant white flowers. If the bulbs aren’t fully open in time to give as a gift, explain they’re primed and will bloom shortly — part of the charm is watching them develop.

If you want to elevate this $10 gift, consider using etching cream and a stencil to personalize the glass with the recipient’s initial for a custom, handcrafted touch. Even without etching, a simple ribbon tied around the vase makes a thoughtful and inexpensive present.
This project requires minimal time and money but yields a charming, fragrant display perfect for holiday gifting. Three weeks and counting — enjoy the blooms when they arrive.
