White Kitchen With Butcher Block Countertops and Apron Sink

We thought our big kitchen reveal week was the perfect time to showcase a reader’s kitchen makeover. This redesign comes from a male blogger who writes as “Beard” (he’s joined by his daughter, “Pigtails”). Beard’s voice is entertaining and his kitchen transformation is impressive. Here’s his note about the project:

I recently gutted and rebuilt the kitchen in my 1950s brick ranch using budget-friendly materials like Ikea cabinets and reclaimed wood for a bench and table.

Kitchen after makeover

Goals for the reboot:

  • Make the most of about 100 square feet. Eliminate clutter and keep only essentials.
  • Open the room by removing excess cabinetry, downsizing appliances, and removing the soffit and ceiling fan. Install recessed lighting for a clean ceiling.
  • Add a robot to help with cooking and cleanup — Rosie.
  • Move the dishwasher from a cramped corner to a spot beside the sink.
  • Build a narrow table that fits the space without overwhelming it.
  • Create a warm, distinctive look that feels different from typical remodels.

The result hit every goal except one.
