Refinish an Old China Cabinet: Step-by-Step Painting Guide

Giving an old thrifted piece of furniture a fresh update is one of our favorite kinds of makeovers. Tanis’s china cabinet project is a perfect example—elegant, thoughtful, and beautifully executed. Here’s a look at the transformation she and her husband completed:

A friend introduced me to this blog and I’ve been hooked ever since. My partner and I bought our first house in May, and three weeks later we got married. We’ve started tackling DIY projects around the house and we’re especially proud of this one: a china cabinet makeover to display our wedding china (you can read more about why it’s meaningful to us on my blog).

Before and after china cabinet

We began by thoroughly washing and sanding the entire piece, then applied primer and finished with a semi-gloss pure white paint. For the back panel we chose a textured wallpaper from the Debbie Travis collection and painted it in “Aegean Blue” by Martha Stewart. The result exceeded our expectations—every bit of elbow grease was worth it.

Styled china cabinet with blue wallpaper

We’re excited for many years of married life and plenty more DIY projects together. Thanks for the inspiration! – Tanis, Tanis Fiber Arts

The blue wallpaper is an incredibly elegant accent that instantly modernizes the cabinet while preserving its charm. We love that Tanis and her husband took a dated piece and made it uniquely theirs. Would you try a similar makeover on a secondhand find? Share your thoughts or ideas—this is the kind of project that proves how small updates can make a big impact.
