Affordable April Houseplants: Fresh Greenery Tips and Picks

As many of you know, each month we like to pick up an inexpensive — sometimes free — bouquet or plant to keep things feeling fresh around the house. The idea originally came from a thoughtful Christmas present from my husband. This month I diverged from our usual plan when I found an adorable little leafy plant in a shiny turquoise ceramic pot for just $2.50 at Walmart. That price is about the same as, or even less than, many grocery-store bouquets, and I love that this splash of foliage brightens my desk and already has its own reusable planter in case the plant doesn’t thrive long-term.

So far it’s doing well. It’s a low-light houseplant, which works perfectly on the right side of my desk where it only gets partial sun. I especially like how it looks next to my shiny pink Crate & Barrel vase — a familiar face from many of our monthly floral posts. Yes, I joked about assigning genders to the blue pot and the pink vase — blue can absolutely work for anyone, and pink shows up in our home (and wardrobe) sometimes too. Color doesn’t need to be gendered.

That’s our monthly dose of greenery. I recommend keeping an eye out for inexpensive potted plants, especially those that come in charming ceramic pots rather than flimsy plastic ones. If you do find a plastic pot you like, you can always transfer the plant into a crisp white $1 ceramic planter from Ikea for an instant upgrade. There are plenty of ways to bring lovely, low-cost foliage into your home.

What are you seeing in the floral and potted plant world lately? Any great deals or sources you’d recommend? Are you snipping branches from your own yard? We considered bringing in cherry blossoms from the tree in front of the house but left them outdoors because of allergies — luckily my symptoms are much better this year. Are you picking up the affordable daffodil bunches at Trader Joe’s or finding other seasonal steals? Share what plants and flowers you’ve been bringing inside lately — I’d love to hear about your finds and favorites.
