Helping Your Dog Settle Into a New Home Quickly

Some readers have asked how Burger is settling into the new house. In short: very well. In a slightly more playful tone: simply splendid.

It only took him a day or two to learn where his food bowl now lives and which door to wait at when he wants to go out. Beyond that, he’s been happily exploring—and re-exploring—his favorite spots. Here are a few photos from the last two months that show how much he’s enjoying his new home.

This photo was taken soon after the move. He quickly claimed a sun-warmed patch of rug in the living room and liked to park himself there every morning.

It became part of his personal GTL routine—growl, tan, lick. Yes, we catch Jersey Shore now and then because it’s my wife’s home state.

When Karl the sectional moved in and started blocking that sunspot, Burger found new sunny locations—sometimes right on the windowsill. He can be such a cat sometimes. In this photo he’s curled up in Clara’s hospital blanket; we brought it home so he could get used to her scent and now it’s his official “blankie.”

On chilly mornings he’ll also climb into someone’s lap, which is a win-win for everyone.

Every now and then he “helps” supervise Clara during playtime—though he mostly naps on the job. If a noise comes from outside, though, all howl breaks loose. See what I did there? Swapped out the usual curse for a howl. Booyah.

Burger supervising playtime

When he’s not aiming for the laziest chihuahua title, Burger takes his job of “quality control” seriously. He tests our new purchases, like our duvet:

He also tried out our new sectional pillows long before the sectional arrived—he tested them on the sleeper sofa in the office and approved:

Burger still squeezes in playtime, usually with his favorite toy: Divalectible. It was actually a gift for Clara, but Burger immediately took a liking to the tiny stuffed chihuahua with a pink feather boa. The toy’s name—Divalectible—is its Beanie Baby name, and somehow it stuck. Also, Sherry makes a distinctive excited noise to call him; it’s what gets him sprinting. Embarrassing in public, perhaps, but effective.

Unsurprisingly, Burger still spends a lot of time under the covers. Even with a whole new house to explore, in many ways he’s the same old Burger.

That’s what our eldest kiddo has been up to when he’s not “supervising” while we paint or demo around the house. Life is pretty good when you’re an eight-pound chihuahua.

Psst—If all goes well there may be another post today or tomorrow. We’ve finally started making progress in the guest bedroom (with just six days until the in-laws arrive—yikes), so we’re likely hard at work as you read this. And Burger is probably supervising.
