Ever since we posted about buying our new organic, natural latex mattress — the Organic Serenity Natural Dunlop Latex Mattress by Savvy Rest — readers have been asking for a one-month update. So here it is. My interest in eco-friendly products led me to search for a mattress without flame-retardant chemicals and made from 100% natural materials that are healthier for people and the planet. We saved for months (we even had a “mattress fund”) to make the purchase, and after living with the 11″ natural mattress for a month, we’re happy to report we love it even more than we expected. Even Burger sleeps more soundly. If you’re wondering whether mattress encasements work to protect against bed bugs, they do — your mattress will be safer for years to come.

How do you evaluate a mattress? For us, the key measures are comfort, sleep quality, and morning-after aches. Here’s how our old hand-me-down spring mattress rated on a scale of 1–10:
- Comfort: 3 — hard as a rock (a featherbed helped a little).
- Quality of Sleep: 5 — we woke up multiple times each night to reposition and get comfortable.
- Morning-After Aches: 8 — frequent stiffness and soreness.
And here’s how the new natural latex mattress encased in organic wool and cotton performs:
- Comfort: 9 — supportive yet allowing you to sink in; we settle into it instantly.
- Quality of Sleep: 8 — we often sleep straight through and don’t wake until the alarm.
- Morning-After Aches: 1 — occasional soreness from painting or projects, not from the bed. It took a couple of nights for our bodies to adjust to the new support level.

Safety was a concern for some readers worried about skipping chemical flame retardants. We confirmed with the manufacturer that this mattress passes federal burn tests, largely because the organic wool encasement provides the necessary flame resistance without added chemicals.

Some people worried about buying a mattress online rather than trying one in a showroom. Our experience was positive: the company’s phone support was very helpful. They walked us through what we wanted and helped choose the density for each latex layer, allowing us to pick the right feel remotely. We learned that natural Dunlop latex tends to be firmer than many expect. Although we wanted a firm, supportive mattress, we chose a configuration of medium + medium + soft. It didn’t sound like a firm setup on paper, but it turned out to be the perfect balance. If you want something extra plush, consider three soft layers — one soft plus two mediums results in a noticeably firmer mattress.
That’s our one-month recap. We’re thrilled with the investment and the improved sleep. Has anyone else made recent sleep upgrades — new pillows, a featherbed, or fresh sheets? Share what you’ve tried and how it’s changed your sleep.
Oh — and speaking of bedroom accessories, we recently picked up a new accent pillow from one of our favorite giveaways. We love the crisp black-on-white lettering. You can find similar Paris-style pillows affordably at many independent sellers.
