DIY Projects with Kids: Smart Tips for Getting Work Done Together

Our podcast has officially reached legal drinking age — happy 21st, YHLHAP! Cheers to you for finding the show notes for Episode #21 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. This week we tackle one of the questions we hear most often: how on earth do you get home improvement projects done with kids underfoot? We’ve asked ourselves that same question many times, so in this episode we share four of our favorite tactics for juggling parenting and DIY, while avoiding the frustration of feeling like nothing ever gets finished. John also confesses a big mistake from our kitchen renovation, Sherry takes a playful stab at a guys-vs-girls Pinterest guessing game, and we discover a shared appreciation for the unexpected intersection of hand crafts and zombies.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio — or listen to it below. Use this page to follow any links, view photos, and check out the notes we mentioned during the show.

What’s New

  • Instead of showing the washed-away gas line markings, here’s a drone photo my neighbor took of our house right after I finished hand-digging (well, shovel-digging) the trenches that might have crossed the gas line. There are two more similar trenches in the front yard and a long stretch down the side. Also, you can see why our lawn desperately needs better watering — the side yard is basically moss city.

That’s Embarrassing

  • As mortifying as it is to share this, here’s the shipping crate full of backsplash tile that I accidentally ordered for our kitchen.

What’s Not

  • We mentioned Pinterest’s official post about what men and women are searching for on the platform — an interesting read about search trends.
  • Side note: their blog is called “Oh, That’s Pinteresting!” — and yes, we love a good pun.
  • If you’re curious about “barndominiums,” we highlighted the one Chip & Joanna Gaines renovated on their show as an example.
  • Also: snackadiums — a fun, over-the-top party food idea we discussed.

We’re Digging

Looking for modern or ironic cross-stitch patterns? Here are a few of the pieces we referenced.

  • Sherry’s LaCroix can cross-stitch now hangs in our foyer; we also love the Walking Dead Daryl piece and several NSFW designs available from independent stitch shops.

  • The Stitch Mill offers a variety of affordable patterns — things like tools and terrariums — most priced around $5–$6 each.
  • We also love the stitched family portraits shared by Family Stitch on Instagram.

Psst — looking for something we referenced in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to open? Here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from past episodes.
