With most of the interior renovations and redecorating finished in our brick rancher, spring became all about curb appeal. We wanted to add charm, color, and a touch of classic style to turn the exterior from ordinary to eye-catching. We began with the front porch and set a single goal: spend a little, get a lot. Here’s the final look, and below we’ll walk through how we got there.

We wanted a balanced, welcoming entrance framed by two large square black planters. Designer options were tempting, but two high-end planters for $300 each didn’t fit our budget. Instead, we found a great budget-friendly alternative at Home Depot: large 18×18″ planters for about $30 apiece. They were sturdy and generously sized—an excellent value for an exterior upgrade that makes a big visual impact.

The original wood tone wasn’t part of our color scheme, but a coat of exterior semi-gloss paint fixed that instantly. Painting the planters black created a cohesive, sophisticated look; even the subtle metal branch pattern reads like an abstract texture rather than a distraction. Black planters pair especially well with brick and a bold door color, and they give the porch a grounded, polished feel.

For planting, we mixed some of our homemade compost with potting soil to create a nutrient-rich blend for our $6 boxwoods. The compost gave the soil extra life while keeping costs down, and the boxwoods will gradually fill in on either side of the porch. In the meantime, we’ll add cheerful annuals around them to provide color and fullness while the boxwoods mature.

To improve drainage without buying specialty materials, we used a simple tip from a horticulturist friend: break old, chipped terracotta pots and place the pieces in the bottom of each planter before adding soil. The shards create space for excess water to move away from roots and help prevent soil from washing out of the drainage holes.

To complete the seating area, we picked up a couple of inexpensive outdoor pillows at Home Depot. At around $12 each, they bring color and tie into our punchy red front door. We paired the pillows with two thrifted Target metal chairs we spray-painted black last summer. The refreshed chairs plus the pillows create a durable, weather-ready seating spot that’s both comfortable and visually appealing.

We did borrow a wooden chair and an extra pillow from inside for photos, but the spray-painted metal chairs are what we left on the porch full-time so they can withstand the elements. Small updates like durable outdoor pillows and refreshed seating make the porch feel intentional without costing much.

We’d still like to add a long outdoor runner and a small side table between the chairs to make the space cozier, but that can wait while the boxwoods grow and we save up. Right now the updated planters, fresh paint, layered soil, simple drainage fix, and affordable textiles deliver a polished porch that enhances curb appeal without breaking the bank.
