Chic Side Tables That Double as Nightstands for Small Bedrooms

Okay, make that two nightstands. Technically they’re living room side tables, but they’ve found a new life in our bedroom.

These tables were nudged out of the living room when Karl arrived, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to give them up. They’re from Target’s Victoria Hagan collection and pair perfectly with the seeded glass lamps we rescued from the late Nate Berkus collection at Linens N’ Things. Since they were available and fit the room, they moved into the master bedroom for now.

Beyond aesthetics, the tables bring a lot of function. Sherry can finally stop stacking her phone and magazines on the floor. Initially we worried the tables were a bit low, but in practice they’re within about five inches of the mattress top, so reaching anything while lounging or reading in bed is easy. The height hasn’t been an issue at all.

They may not be permanent. Sherry keeps dreaming about eggplant-colored lamps, and I’d love nightstands with drawers for hidden storage someday. Still, these were free and they work beautifully for now.

A pleasant surprise is how the new bedside setup changes the bedroom’s mood at night. Switching on the soft table lamps instead of the bright overhead fan light instantly warms the room. The paint takes on a greener tone under the lamp glow, and interesting shadows play across the ceiling thanks to Ed the Bed’s silhouette.

I also love the little convenience of having a lamp within arm’s reach. No more getting up to flip the wall switch or pretending to be asleep so Sherry turns the lights off. It’s a small comfort that makes bedtime feel cozier.

Next on our list is upgrading the ceiling fan. It’s not very attractive, and we’ve been browsing for something more interesting — maybe a bold choice that makes us smile. Until then, these repurposed tables are doing all the heavy lifting: balancing the room visually, improving bedside function, and creating a much warmer nighttime atmosphere.
