Remember when we mentioned enjoying Richmond’s West Avenue Garden Tour last weekend? One clever family took the opportunity to host an open house in the middle of the tour, and we were lucky to know one of the hosts (she writes for R. Home magazine). She was kind enough to let us take photos and share this lovely home. Here’s a polished look at what we saw.
From the moment we stepped inside, the homeowners’ preference for a modern, minimalist aesthetic was clear. Yet the space remains comfortable and inviting, with plush furniture that keeps clean lines front and center. The artwork throughout the house is a standout—especially the vibrant tangerine piece above the front room fireplace, which pops against crisp white walls and charcoal upholstery.

Many of the brownstones we visit have generous doorways that connect a more formal front room with a relaxed, centrally located living area. In this home, bold square art over the fireplace echoes a matching piece in the adjoining sitting room, creating cohesion between spaces. The striped chaise adds a playful, stylish touch.

The dining room continues the minimalist theme, deliberately uncluttered so attention falls on the stunning linear chandelier. The overall effect is refined and modern, with each element thoughtfully chosen to complement the whole.

Looking down from the stairs, the living room’s mix of modern pieces with natural textures felt fresh and unexpected. Seagrass chairs and a jute rug paired with sleek furnishings give the room warmth and layered contrast—an inviting blend of materials we always appreciate.

The guest bedroom, which doubles as a sewing room, charmed us instantly. A balcony at the back brings in light and air, while an iron bed complements simple black decals on an affordable Ikea cabinet. Small DIY touches—like draping a pretty piece of fabric over a less-than-perfect table—showcase how inexpensive updates can make a space feel sweeter and more personal.

The kitchen exemplifies modern simplicity: stainless steel open shelving that feels both chic and confident, paired with an industrial-style stainless island. Oversized base cabinet drawers and frosted cabinet doors add thoughtful functionality and visual interest. A candid moment of a tour guide at the sink captured the lived-in charm of the space.

Since the homeowners participated in the West Avenue Garden Tour, the backyard was also a highlight: a serene garden with a pergola cloaked in leafy vines, creating a peaceful outdoor retreat.

That wraps up our spontaneous house tour. We hope you enjoyed this peek inside a beautifully edited, modern brownstone—where smart design choices, artful accents, and a few clever DIY touches come together to create a cohesive and welcoming home.
