7 Festive Christmas Table Settings to Impress Your Guests

We’re back with a second place-setting post focused on creating a festive holiday atmosphere. Using only items we already had at home and humming a few Christmas carols for inspiration, I put together seven different tablescapes. Below is a simple, practical play-by-play to help you recreate these looks.

I started the first setting by using a spring table runner (surprisingly effective for winter), placing a feather tree on a cake stand, and arranging several white objects—ceramic pears, candle holders—and vases filled with green yard clippings. Green bowls topped with white snowflake ornaments (picked up cheaply last year) finished the look and would double nicely as take-home favors for guests.

For the second tablescape I went with a more traditional look: a red runner (a cheap pashmina repurposed for the table), small decorative trees, red punch, white servingware, and a large ornament in each bowl that could also serve as a guest favor. The combination feels classic and sparkly.

Next I swapped the runner for a neutral fall runner, added more ornaments and hurricanes, and borrowed white accents from the coffee table—an antler candlestick and a shell ball—to layer texture. Chandelier ornaments placed on each plate added graphic interest and seasonal shine. An Ikea sheepskin draped over the bench created a cozy, warm vibe perfect for a Christmas dinner.

Returning to the red pashmina runner, I added a small tree, bottles of Pellegrino, and a pitcher of punch to create a practical centerpiece—guests can help themselves without multiple trips to the kitchen. Each plate received a green embroidered napkin and a simple apple place-card holder.

To make an apple into a place-card holder, use a knife to create a shallow slice just behind the center and tuck a handwritten card into the groove—simple and charming.

I then returned to a scheme of sparkling white objects—feather tree, shell ball, antler candlestick, flower votive holder—and added green wine and Pellegrino bottles plus green glass votives to brighten each place setting. These votives can also be given to guests as favors. Swap the green glass for blue vases and votives, and you have a beautiful white-and-blue palette suitable for Hanukkah.

One setting took on a New Year’s Eve feel with extra glitz: the feather tree, mercury glass candle holders scored affordably, and plenty of ornaments for guests to take home. I swapped the bench for the two additional dining chairs and hooked stockings to the backs with ornament hooks—an easy way to add charm and small gifts like socks or candy canes.

Finally, a casual holiday spread works perfectly on a simple buffet rather than a formal table. Arrange bottles of sparkling water and punch alongside bowls of pistachios, cookies, and savory crackers for an approachable snack station. Placing a few ornaments and white ceramic pears on a cake stand adds a touch of sparkle with minimal effort.
