Episode 163: Our Massive New Project Revealed

Curious about our next big renovation? It’s a project we’ve thought about for years and finally feel ready to take on—partly because we sold our duplex. This week we explain why we’re moving forward now, what’s motivating us, and why the whole idea makes us excited, nostalgic, and inspired at once. It’s also going to test our commitment to simplifying life. Along the way, some travel hiccups introduced us to a few new books we’re enjoying—and one I’m eagerly anticipating.

  • As mentioned in the episode, we’re keeping project photos limited until the deal is final. The photo above shows one of the neighborhoods we explored during our recent trip to Florida. We were both surprised by how wooded some areas are.
  • We found a lot of inspiration while walking neighborhoods. This house we spotted wasn’t for sale, but we loved the minty color palette.

  • We also revisited past spring break trips to Florida, including our 2018 trip that we called our best spring break yet. Last year’s trip to the same Fort Lauderdale-ish area was also great.

  • I promised a link to Episode #95 from two years ago when we first talked about our current house feeling too big. We’ve also discussed downsizing with guests like Dana Miller (Episode #33) and Shavonda Gardner (Episode #106).
  • Sherry insisted I include this picture of one of the two seashell-shaped sinks that still sit in our upstairs hall bathroom—proof that even after seven years there are still projects left on the list.

  • Despite a complicated journey home, we were lucky to bump into our friend Traci from Beneath My Heart during a layover in Charlotte. She’d flown from Nashville and we from Richmond—yet we ended up at the same gate by coincidence.

We’re Digging

  • Sherry recently enjoyed two Sally Thorne novels: 99% Mine and The Hating Game.
  • I’m looking forward to reading Malcolm Gladwell’s Talking to Strangers after hearing an episode of his Revisionist History podcast—there was a clip from an interview he did for Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday that piqued my interest.
  • That Super Soul Sunday clip briefly featured us years ago during the filming in our second house—the day Sherry threw out her back, which made for a memorable morning.
  • The official clip on YouTube doesn’t include Oprah saying our names, so we captured that brief moment separately because, well, we’re nerds and proud of it.
  • You can read more about that moment in a blog post where we shared the full story.
