When We’re the Last to Find Out: How to Handle Surprising News

Yesterday began like any other morning: John left for work, I published the daily post and started tackling a design problem, and Burger chased a few insects on the back patio. Then John called to tell me that we had just been featured on CNN.

WHAAAAAT?!

It turned out CNN had loved our bench makeover. Not only was it highlighted on CNN’s homepage, but our names and website were mentioned during a live broadcast, accompanied by before-and-after photos of the bench. Needless to say, it stopped being an ordinary day.

A kind producer at CNN had contacted us the day before with a few follow-up questions about the project, so we suspected our makeover might get a mention on their site within the week. We never expected a live-TV shout-out less than 24 hours later. John didn’t see the broadcast himself—he learned about it because a coworker’s spouse called to say they’d spotted it. We literally heard about it through the grapevine. Wild!

If you want to relive the moment, here’s the link to our CNN appearance—a sentence we never imagined we’d write.

Huge, grateful thanks to the team at CNN for loving the bench makeover and for the unexpected mention. You turned an ordinary day into something unforgettable. We’re still pinching ourselves.
