Brighten a Dark Office by Painting Brick: A Step-by-Step Guide

Jolie transformed a dark, brick laundry room and adjacent office into a bright, welcoming space with a few simple updates. Her project is a great example of how paint and a handful of affordable changes can completely alter a room’s mood and functionality. Here’s her story:

My den transformation was such an amazing inspiration to me that I decided to paint my brick walls, too. It’s my laundry room with an office over to the side. Before the makeover, this room used to feel dark and gloomy and it just didn’t flow with the rest of the house.

So I painted the walls a light color and it transformed the room! It doesn’t feel gloomy anymore—it’s become one of my favorite spaces in the house. It actually makes me want to do the laundry! The update was easy and inexpensive. Here’s what I did:

  • Painted the walls Sherwin-Williams Antique White
  • Painted the built-in cabinets Olympic Light Sage
  • Added bamboo shades
  • Hung white curtains for a soft, airy feel
  • Displayed sea coral artwork to bring a coastal accent
  • Created a burlap cabinet curtain for texture and warmth

I hope you enjoy the before and after pictures. And thank you for all the wonderful work you put into your blog. It’s truly inspirational. – Jolie

Those painted built-ins are especially charming, adding a subtle pop of color that enlivens the space without overwhelming it. Jolie borrowed a few ideas from a den makeover she admired, and the result is a cohesive, brighter room that now fits the house’s overall style.

Her approach highlights a few key takeaways for anyone facing a dark, brick-lined room:

  • Light, neutral wall paint instantly brightens and visually expands small or gloomy spaces.
  • Painting built-ins a complementary color adds personality while keeping the room balanced.
  • Simple window treatments—bamboo shades and light curtains—control light and soften the look.
  • Textured elements like a burlap curtain and coastal artwork provide warmth and character.

Jolie’s makeover shows that thoughtful, budget-friendly choices can make a significant difference. The room now feels fresh, inviting, and more in tune with the rest of her home.
