This before-and-after bathroom makeover comes from Kahley in Ontario, Canada. Together with her husband Steve, she transformed their home’s only bathroom, proving that a dark, sophisticated palette can still feel bright and airy. Here is her story:
We are a young family of four — me, my husband, and our kids Noah (4) and Lexie (2). The only bathroom in our house dated back to the 1950s, so it was high time for a renovation!

Since it was our only bathroom, we wanted it to be extremely multi-purpose. We needed a tub and shower, closet space, a dirty laundry area, lots of concealed storage, and better layout flow.

I selected the paint color early on (Benjamin Moore “Gray”). The built-ins were designed from plans I developed to maximize storage and function. The shower curtain is handmade from discount suiting fabric I found at Fabricland. The striped Roman shades were made by Tonic Living in Toronto, and the accent color we settled on is a warm mustard yellow. The towels are from Sears.

Here’s a bottom view of our vanity. I loved a Pottery Barn design but it was out of our price range, so I had a similar piece custom built for a fraction of the cost.

I call this the “sexy tile” — an enlarged subway-style Centura tile (approximately 4″ x 12″) in a high-gloss gray. It feels polished and modern. I would have loved a walk-in shower, but with only one bathroom and little ones to bathe, a combination tub and shower made the most sense. Thanks for checking out our bathroom makeover. I hope you love it! — xo, Kahley

What stands out most is the balance of form and function — the built-in storage flanking the shower and the bold choice of dark gray tile paired with a gray ceiling. Both choices give the room a sophisticated, cohesive look while keeping it practical for family life. Which element is your favorite?
