Decluttered Detached Basement: Remodel Ideas and Storage Solutions

Between all the photos and video tours, you might think you’ve seen every corner of our house. Not quite — there’s one room you haven’t seen until now.

It’s tucked beneath our sunroom and accessed through a private exterior entrance, so you have to step outside and go down a few steps to reach it.

Because it’s not easily visible or convenient to reach, we’ve turned this space into more of a dumping ground than a usable room. It’s embarrassing to show, but here’s the current state of the basement:

To be clear, it’s not a finished room, so using it for storage makes sense. That said, it’s gotten completely out of hand — we can barely step halfway into the space. The main reason for the accumulation is that we’ve been collecting items for a garage sale for over a year. Now that we finally set a date (Saturday, April 26), it’s time to sort through everything and get organized.

That’s where you come in. We’d love any garage sale tips you can share — from advertising and pricing to display strategies and timing. Tell us what’s worked for you: how you attract buyers, bundle items, price effectively, or stage things to sell quickly. Practical suggestions like pricing odd items, using social media or neighborhood boards, setting up clear signage, or grouping similar items together are especially welcome.

Once we clear the space and hold the sale, we’ll post after photos so you can see the transformation. We already have plans for the bonus square footage: fresh paint, better lighting, a cozy rug, a screen to hide the water heater, and some simple furniture to make the room functional. With a little effort, this underutilized area will become a comfortable and attractive part of the house.

So please share your best garage sale advice — we’re ready to get to work and would really appreciate your tips and tricks.
