We don’t have stairs in our house, which we love. Still, it’s fun to see creative stairway makeovers – like the one Roeshel shared. The most impressive part: she achieved the look without buying anything new. Read her note below.
I’m sure you get many submissions, but I recently gave our stairway some pizzazz using leftover paint and items we already had. It turned out fun! I’ve included before and after pictures in case you like this little makeover. Before was boring.

I cut a diamond-shaped stencil from posterboard and lightly traced the pattern on the wall with a pencil. I used FrogTape to mask the shape, cutting the tape at an angle to make the corners easier. I did two coats and removed the tape immediately after the second coat while the paint was still wet. You can touch up as needed (I’m not a perfectionist, so I didn’t bother, but you likely won’t notice anything in the after photos).

The original wall color was Benjamin Moore’s Smokey Taupe; the new top color is Glidden’s Linen.

I may add more stencil work or patterns to the accent wall – still thinking – but for now it’s a big improvement and a lot more fun than the boring before. Maybe it’s a little bold, but doesn’t it look better? – Roeshel

We agree — it looks fantastic. Even better, it didn’t cost anything. It’s rewarding when overlooked areas get a bit of attention. Notice the other small updates she made: the yellow-painted table, the hung vintage window, and the framed faux deer head that adds personality. Which detail is your favorite?
Psst — we announced this week’s giveaway winner. Check the announcement on the original blog to see if it’s you.
