Episode 137: Our Next Home Renovation Project Revealed

We have an exciting update this week about a new design project we’re starting — how it came about, what excites us most, and why it will push us in new directions (yes, it’s out-of-state). We also share how last week’s spring break reinforced our commitment to owning less and enjoying more time together, even though John returned with a strangely memorable souvenir. Plus: a new method we found for wrangling digital photos, a brilliantly simple DIY tool, and — naturally — some nutmeat talk.

What’s New

  • As mentioned in the episode, our Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale reminded all four of us how much we prefer fewer things and more time together.
  • We first realized this on our 2017 Florida Spring Break and talked about it in Episode #45, where Sherry also describes reading Simplicity Parenting — a book she’s returned to many times since.

  • Here’s a peek at the house we rented through HomeAway. It was roomy, clean, updated, and pet-friendly — but what sold us was the backyard pool. Previous guests had left a pile of floats (including two engagement ring floats!), so the pool basically became our toy chest.

  • We’ve covered a more detailed recap of our Fort Lauderdale trip in a previous post, but here are some highlights from this year:
    • Food: Rocco’s Tacos, El Camino, Milk Money, Le Tub Saloon, To The Moon candy shop, and ChillN for nitrogen ice cream.
    • Activities: Birch State Park (that giant tree in our photos is there), a sunset Water Taxi ride (highly recommended), and Everglades Holiday Park — touristy but worth it, especially when a wild alligator swam beside our boat.

  • We played Tenzi every night (you’ve probably heard us mention it before) and of course we always love a game of Uno.

That’s Embarrassing

  • I wish I had photographed the intimidating built-in dresser that “attacked” me in the dark — it felt far more sinister in the moment than it looks in hindsight. Below are photos of the unlikely injury I sustained.

  • The first photo was taken in Florida the morning after the incident; the second shows the bruise back in Richmond as it faded past its worst stage.
  • If you picked up the April issue of Real Simple you may have noticed Sherry’s unforgettable quote on page 126. If not, it’s a nutty, meaty line worth a smile.

Real Simple Idea House

  • We’re thrilled to be designing a room for the Real Simple idea home this summer in Brooklyn, NY. Work will take place over the next few months and the room will be revealed in the October issue. If you follow us on Instagram, Sherry will share behind-the-scenes updates as the project progresses.
  • You can view photos of last year’s show house on Real Simple’s site for inspiration — a bit intimidating, but also inspiring. Designers like Jenny Komenda and Shea McGee have shared posts about their rooms in past years.

Quick Tip

  • Gemini Photos is the app I use to sort and cull images on my phone. It groups similar shots, suggests the best one to keep (plus any you’ve favorited or edited), and lets you delete the rest with a single click. It’s a fast, low-stress way to shrink an overflowing photo library.

We’re Digging

  • I’ve been using a StudBuddy stud finder on recent projects at the duplex. It’s been reliable; I filmed a quick clip and hope Sherry posts it to Instagram Stories soon so you can see it in action.

  • Sherry’s current go-to sunscreen for sensitive skin is Neutrogena Clear Face Liquid-Lotion Sunscreen, which she’s been reaching for regularly.
