How to Paint Your Front Door Bright Yellow for Instant Curb Appeal

Allow me to give you a hint: y-e-l-l-o-w-d-o-o-r.

That’s right — I’m painting our front door the happiest shade: rain-boot yellow. That’s not the official paint name, but it perfectly describes the glossy, sunny yellow we picked.

I had hoped to share after photos already, but real life intervened and the prep work took longer than expected.

The good news is the drilling, spackling, sanding, and deglossing are finished. All the basic prep is done, so once the paint dries I’ll share full details and photos of the whole took-longer-than-I-thought process — hopefully this afternoon.

Yep — it was a very similar cheerful yellow. We loved that bright happy look far more than the glossy black color we tried later.

That yellow was probably tied with the bold fire-engine red door we later used after a paint and hardware update, and a big porch makeover.

For some reason, none of the other swatches excited us for this new house. When we held up other colors we just felt blah — but yellow sparked something. So yellow it is. I’m hoping this little door makeover jumps-starts our curb appeal, since there are hundreds of other outdoor projects on the list. Right now the front door is practically hidden by the jungle of our front yard, so any pop of color will help.
