How to Use Everything in Your Fridge Before Moving

Remember when we mentioned we were on a grocery shopping hiatus? The plan was simple: use up as much food as possible from the fridge and freezer so we wouldn’t have to worry about keeping things cold during the roughly six-hour gap between leaving our house and moving into the new one (which, all going well, should happen Monday afternoon if the bank’s transfer stays on schedule). Here’s what the fridge looked like two weeks ago when we began:

And here’s how it looks now, on truck-loading day, after two weeks of inventively using up what we had:

Not bad, right? Thanks to my near-compulsive list-making strategy (explained here), we narrowed the freezer down to one carton of ice cream and a bag of edamame. The fridge is now holding just a few condiments, some bread and cheese, a few pickles, three yogurt cups and a couple sticks of butter. We’ll probably finish the rest of the ice cream and the pickles today (no, I’m not pregnant — promise).

The remaining items will fit easily into a small cooler we’ll place in the refrigerated moving van, so everything should travel without fuss — much easier than hauling multiple large coolers or borrowing John’s sister’s fridge for the day. On top of that, we saved money by skipping grocery runs for a couple of weeks.

Best of all, this little forced-diet experiment has made us even more excited about moving into our new house, because it means we can go on a full grocery shopping spree and return to normal meals. Woot woot.
