It’s obvious from the many embedded music clips and song-titled posts that John and I are big music fans. John even mentioned he sings a lot in this post, and I’ve admitted to having a youthful crush on a certain rapper (an affection that once led me to say the word “phat” on national TV). So when a musician friend in Richmond casually invited us into their studio to play around, creative sparks flew. One idea led to another and we poured our DIY energy into a homemade song for you. It’s packed with life lessons, house trials and triumphs, design rules we follow (and sometimes break), and plenty of home-related commentary — all over a catchy beat.

We’re hardly Big & Pac, but after getting the edited version back from the studio we’re excited to release our first single, titled: Hush.

So without further ado, here’s our playful, homemade music video:
If you’re at work and can’t watch it now, save it for later. Here’s a quick preview of what to expect:
- My hair’s down
- Some entertaining special effects
- Burger and Clara make brief cameos
- Ceramic animals appear throughout
- Shelves get styled
- A reminder about the importance of safety glasses

One more confession:

We didn’t actually record in a professional studio. Instead, we made a short, tongue-in-cheek track at home: a forty-second piece where we recorded a few lines into a computer microphone, layered in some stock vocal effects, and used a free beat we found online. We paired the audio with a deliberately cliché video we edited at home, and suddenly we had our first single. Still, it’s worth watching when you have a moment — how many rappers drop the words “miter saw” in a verse?
All told, it was more fun than two thirty-somethings probably should have. This video joins our yearly April Fool’s tradition — can you believe this is our fifth year? — and it’s one of our favorites. If you want to revisit past entries, check the posts from previous years for more playful projects.
Hope you enjoyed the surprise — though we suspect many of you saw it coming.
