Light Blue and Red Nursery Design Ideas for a Charming Baby Room

When Brieanne shared her incredible nursery before-and-after photos, we were excited to showcase the transformation. Below is the letter she sent describing the project.

Last year my sister asked me (her younger sister with an architecture degree) to help design a nursery for my future — and now completely adorable — niece Claire. Because my sister and brother-in-law might add another child in the same space, they wanted a gender-neutral nursery. Starting with bedding by Skip Hop that my sister loved, we created a mood board. The criteria were simple: gender neutral, uncluttered, calming and budget-friendly. Jen (my sister) wanted a fresh, relaxing room she would enjoy, since she’d be spending most of the time there. With that in mind I designed a modern take on The Little Prince, one of my sister’s favorite childhood stories, even though the baby is a girl. I hope you like the nursery as much as I enjoy your blog! – Brieanne

Here’s the room when it was serving as a half-hearted guest bedroom before the makeover:

Here is Brieanne’s resource list for the project:

  • Crib and changer: Cub Kids by NettoCollection
  • Toy box: my sister’s childhood toy box
  • Rocking chair: family heirloom from our grandmother
  • Bedding: Mod Dot by Skip Hop, a gift from my sister’s in-laws
  • Side table: LACK table from Ikea
  • Shelf: LACK shelf from Ikea
  • Lamp: repurposed from another room (lampshade from Ikea)
  • Mobile: needle-felted birds made from red wool, hung on sticks collected at our family cabin in Lake Tahoe, assembled on site
  • Mural: painted by me after projecting an image from The Little Prince
  • Decal: Bloom, by Elephannie
  • Quote: stick-on letters reading: “It is just as it is with the flower. If you love a flower that lives on a star, it is sweet to look at the sky at night. All the stars are a-bloom with flowers.”

Brieanne and her sister did a wonderful job turning a bland guest room into a cozy, charming nursery for little Claire. From the handmade mobile to the Little Prince–inspired mural and the poetic wall quote, every detail feels thoughtful and personal.
