More Houses, More Problems? How Moving Affects Your Stress

Now that the clocks have fallen back for Daylight Saving Time (and if you have kids, they were up extra early—congrats?), here are the show notes for Episode #23 of Young House Love Has A Podcast. This episode was recorded from a hotel room in Baltimore. We answer three listener calls about home updates (from how projects are holding up years later to adjusting to moving from a small ranch to a larger two-story house). Sherry nearly predicted a 2017 color of the year, John gets emotional over another podcast, and we discuss why doing DIY on camera feels especially nerve‑wracking. In honor of Election Day, our quiz takes a surprisingly political turn.

You can download this episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio, or listen to it on the player above. Use this page to find links, notes, and photos we referenced.

What’s New

  • Above is a photo from our architecture tour of Chicago: the Chicago Cultural Center and its huge Tiffany glass dome, with fellow bloggers enjoying the view.
  • Below is Sherry’s shot of our hotel-room recording setup in Baltimore. Note the makeshift sound‑deadening bathmat on the table and the laptop propped on the bed for a professional setup.

Update

  • You can listen back to our “What’s Not” quiz in Episode 17 where we guessed what Benjamin Moore might call its 2017 Color of the Year.
  • Benjamin Moore’s actual pick for 2017 was Shadow, which was discussed on the brand’s announcement page.

What’s Not

  • If you want to browse sofas, we linked to Pottery Barn’s sofa collection. For a quick refresher on U.S. vice presidents, we referenced the Wikipedia list.

  • The photo above shows our stair runner before and after. We also linked to the rug itself and our original post detailing how we installed it.
  • If you’re not familiar with our three homes, you can tour them in the photo galleries labeled First, Second, and Current.
  • Rough floor plans for each house are available in posts where we played architect and shared the layouts.
  • Below is a photo of the kitchen runner we love—its forgiving pattern made it a great choice. It’s from Ballard Designs.

We’re Digging

  • We’re enjoying the Daily Calendar from Social Print Studio and thought it was worth sharing.
  • We also recommended the Reply All podcast and mentioned two standout episodes: “Boy in Photo” and “The Cathedral.” We embedded the audio players for both episodes below.

Psst — if you’re trying to find something we mentioned in a past episode but can’t remember which show notes to open, here’s a master list of everything we’ve been digging from past episodes.
