Recently I was at Target with John’s sister, wandering down the candle aisle, when she asked me for a recommendation. John and I have long liked Method candles, and now that we’ve moved toward greener choices at home, we appreciate them even more. Because Method candles are made of soy, they’re a much better option for indoor air quality than many of the cheaper alternatives.
Naturally I pointed out the chic little glass Method candles, and Emily picked two she liked—one for the buffet between her living and dining areas…

…and one for her kitchen counter:

They’re lovely, aren’t they? The best part is that the glass containers don’t have to be tossed once the candle is finished. A great way to extend their usefulness is to reuse the jars as small dip bowls or ice cream cups. Imagine them holding guacamole and salsa at a casual get-together, or a scoop of mint chocolate chip for an after-dinner treat. They’d also look charming stacked on an open shelf, ready for everything from M&Ms to mixed nuts.
Here’s a simple, reliable trick for removing leftover wax from a glass candle container: place the container in the freezer for about an hour. The cold will make the wax contract and usually pop free in a single piece. Once the wax lifts out, wash the glass with hot water or run it through the dishwasher to make sure it’s clean and safe for food or condiments. Easy and effective.
How would you repurpose these little bowls? While we’re at it, what are your favorite candles right now? Any soy options you absolutely love?
