Spring is here, and with it comes the feeling that summer is just around the corner. This will be our first real summer at the beach house — last year we were still tiling all three bathrooms through Labor Day — and our plan is to spend plenty of time there to both tackle projects and actually enjoy the shoreline.
While getting the house ready, we realized we’d been neglecting another important preparation: getting ourselves ready for summer.
All the fast food eaten on drives to and from the beach, combined with the workouts we’ve skipped because we were out of town or exhausted from projects, added up. So in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day we decided to recommit to fitness. We’re calling the series Beach House Body, and we’d love for you to join us.

We’re not fitness professionals or models, and that’s the point. This series is approachable fitness for regular people who don’t always have perfect form or a spotless routine. Starting this spring, we’ll release a short video each Saturday that highlights enjoyable, beginner-friendly workouts designed for everyday folks.

To get everyone excited for the kickoff next weekend, we put together a short preview video. Turn the volume up and press play to get a taste of what’s coming.
Note: if you’re viewing this post in a reader, you may need to click through to the original post to see the video.
If you can’t watch right away, here’s a preview of the kinds of exercises we’ll cover. We’ll begin with classic gym moves like strength training and core work, all demonstrated in a beginner-friendly way.

We’ll also include lower-intensity yoga sessions and high-energy aerobic routines. One favorite move is a shoulder and core combination that Sherry swears by — great for building endurance for real-life tasks like painting.

To keep things interesting, we created bonus exercises that use household items instead of gym equipment. A spare paint can or a box of tiles can become an effective weight — the heavier, the better. It’s a practical, DIY-friendly approach to staying active.

A lot of our makeshift weights came from the garage. Carrying a tool bag during walking lunges added a functional twist to a familiar move, and Sherry found lunges much more entertaining when she held a box of tiling supplies. These little adaptations make workouts feel relevant to everyday home projects.

The series is meant to form a complete routine, so stick with it from start to finish. When you have a spare moment, go back and watch the full videos for guidance and pacing.
By the end of the series our workouts get pretty creative — you might even find yourself laughing as you exercise.
… APRIL FOOLS!

Some of you probably suspected this as soon as we mentioned Sherry working out (podcast listeners know she prefers “accidental exercise”), and we hope we fooled a few readers for a moment. While we could all stand to move more and eat a little healthier, we’re not embarking on a public fitness journey this time.
If you enjoy our April Fools’ antics, here’s a look back at past pranks from the last decade:
- 2017 – The launch of our novelty sock line
- 2016 – An app for swapping out decor items
- 2015 – Siri for home decorating
- 2014 – An inter-household crafting challenge
- 2013 – “Hush” — our debut music video
- 2012 – A totally reasonable toilet purchase
- 2011 – Burger’s very own playroom
- 2010 – A super classy curb appeal upgrade
- 2009 – The purrfect light fixtures
Wishing everyone a fun April Fools’ Day and a wonderful Easter!
