Transform Your Laundry Room With 4 Everyday Items

I’m excited to share this transformation — it’s my favorite to date. Even more amusing: I’m unveiling our brand-new laundry nook even though I’m not the one who does the laundry (modern life!).

We created this updated laundry area on a tight budget, and the results made a dramatic difference in the home. It’s amazing how a few inexpensive changes can make a space feel fresh, organized, and more functional. My husband now does laundry with a little extra enthusiasm — sorry, honey, your appliance dedication is now public!

Before the makeover, the laundry closet had bi-fold doors and the wall sat uncomfortably close to the sunroom door, which stole valuable hallway space and made the area feel cramped.

Now, the same spot has been transformed into a neat, efficient laundry nook that fits the flow of our home much better and looks inviting.

The makeover relied on three affordable elements that completely changed the space:

  • A painted and sealed plywood countertop
  • Two large frames used as decorative backing
  • Two sets of bamboo blinds to conceal overhead storage

That was essentially it. We built a simple counter from a sheet of plywood, sanded, painted, and finished it with polyurethane to create a durable surface for folding and storage. Two large frames from Ikea were leaned against the back wall; rather than expensive artwork, we used patterned wrapping paper inside the frames to create inexpensive, cohesive visuals that cleverly hide unsightly outlet boxes and plumbing.

To keep the upper shelf clutter out of sight, we hung a pair of bamboo blinds. They’re an inexpensive, attractive solution that quickly hides storage bins and supplies while keeping the area feeling warm and textured. The blinds also make the nook feel more intentional and finished without the need for built-in cabinetry.

We also found a rolling storage caddy at a discount store for under twenty dollars. It fits perfectly between the washer and dryer and stores detergents, cleaning supplies, and other essentials so everything stays within easy reach but off the countertop.

This combination of a simple DIY counter, clever visual covers, and smart storage made the laundry nook more functional and inviting without breaking the bank. The overall effect is tidy and polished while remaining practical for daily use.

If you’re considering a small laundry refresh, here are a few practical takeaways from our project:

  • Make the most of inexpensive materials: plywood, paint, and a protective finish can create a durable, customized countertop at a fraction of the cost of pre-made surfaces.
  • Use large frames or art to disguise unsightly fixtures. Inexpensive prints or patterned paper can look intentional and stylish when framed.
  • Install lightweight blinds or curtains to conceal open shelving. They’re easy to install and can be changed seasonally for a quick visual update.
  • Think vertical and narrow for storage: slim rolling carts fit tight gaps and keep everyday items accessible without cluttering counters.

Our little laundry nook has made everyday chores feel a bit more pleasant, and it’s a reminder that small, well-planned changes can have a big impact. We’d love to hear how you’ve organized your laundry areas, closets, or other small spaces — we have plenty of corners and crevices that could use better solutions, and inspiration from others is always welcome.
