Wedding Week II: The Day We Nearly Tied the Knot

By now you know we held our wedding at Casa Petersik, but believe it or not we originally booked a proper venue right after we got engaged — long before we ever saw our brick ranch. As soon as we fell in love with our future home, we asked for our deposit back (our date was still more than a year away) and the venue kindly refunded every cent. We were excited to tackle an at-home wedding — you know we love a DIY challenge — but the first venue we picked was pretty special, too. Two years later we wandered back to revisit it and snapped some photos to share. Meet the place where we almost tied the knot: Stony Point School.

Stony Point is a charming private school set inside a historic Tudor mansion, complete with herringbone-pattern brickwork, a slate roof, and a little breezeway that instantly feels like home.

Just beyond that breezeway lies a sweeping, manicured lawn ideal for an outdoor ceremony, with room for a tented reception, a patio perfect for a cocktail hour, and charming brick walkways and details that won us over right away.

One of those quaint brick paths leads from the patio down to the lawn — a simple feature that adds so much character and gives great flow between spaces.

And check out this brick archway draped in ivy. Imagine the wedding photos you could take with that backdrop — timeless and romantic.

Probably the most magical feature is the tree-lined path running parallel to the lawn. We pictured putting a few little attractions here beside the reception tent — maybe a photo clothesline or a yellow-and-green candy station — and letting guests wander and enjoy the setting.

There’s even a delightful brick-and-slate birdhouse perched on a garden wall. Have you ever seen finer accommodations for a bird? It’s the small, thoughtful details like this that made the venue so memorable.

Another gorgeous spot is the iron gate entwined with ivy — such a lush, inviting scene for portraits and candid moments.

Here’s the tree-lined path from the other direction. This stretch was our favorite part of the property — the light filtering through the trees made it feel quietly magical.

Still, despite all the charm at Stony Point, our backyard wedding was everything we hoped for — and we saved some money by celebrating at home.

Everything happens for a reason, and sharing this little Stony Point School spotlight might help engaged locals discover the wedding venue of their dreams.

What about you? Did you have an almost-wedding location you booked early or backed out of at the last minute? Has anyone else considered getting married at a school or private home? We’d love to hear your stories.
