What’s That Scent in the Air? How to Identify Unusual Odors

It’s not just the chill in the air or the scent of pumpkin spice — there’s a seasonal challenge brewing, and we’re diving in. While the leaves and cozy treats are delightful, another tradition has us excited: a fresh Pinterest Challenge.

Yes, those awkward childhood Halloween photos mean one thing: it’s time for another Pinterest Challenge. This idea started when Katie Bower suggested we stop endlessly pinning and actually make something inspired by our boards. It’s an invitation to take inspiration and turn it into real projects — nothing sponsored, just a communal push to create.

Over the past year we’ve had a blast with these seasonal challenges. We’ve tackled projects big and small: a clothespin light fixture for our laundry room, a stack of handmade holiday ornaments, a beanbag-style pouf for a cozy reading nook, and some DIY artwork. Each time we try to reinterpret something we found online and make it our own.

The only real rule is to put your own spin on an idea you’ve pinned and credit the creator who inspired you. Projects can be anything — decor, sewing, food, furniture, or something else entirely. We prefer items from sites that make sharing easy with “Pin It” buttons, but inspiration can come from anywhere. The goal is accessible DIY: things you can build without specialized tools, that are portable rather than permanently fixed, and that feel fresh and personal.

This round, John and I brainstormed in bed and landed on a project that will likely be large in size, movable, and use chalkboard paint — a classic Pinterest staple. The exact plan will evolve, but we’re aiming for something that others can recreate without a lot of fuss. A few links that sparked ideas for us include a large chalkboard, a leaning easel board, and a door-chalkboard — all of which helped shape our thinking.

  1. This big chalkboard that makes a bold statement
  2. A leaning easel board for flexible display
  3. A door-sized chalkboard option for compact spaces

We’re also excited to have some guest hosts joining us this season — creative folks who’ve participated in past challenges and brought great projects to life. Contributors this time include Carmel from Our Fifth House and Sarah from Ugly Duckling House, both of whom have shared standout projects in previous challenges.

Consider this your friendly invite: take something you’ve pinned, give it your own twist, and join the challenge. We’ll spend the weekend creating and regroup next Tuesday morning (the 30th) to share projects. In past seasons this has turned into an inspiring link-up full of creative ideas, and we hope to do the same again. Drop by next Tuesday to see what everyone made and to share your own completed projects for others to enjoy and maybe pin.

Will you tackle food, crafts, sewing, painting, furniture, or something totally unexpected? Whatever you choose, make it yours and have fun with it. And no, despite saying “Pinterest” a lot, this is not sponsored — it’s simply a community of makers ready to turn inspiration into action.

Quick reminder: this challenge is independent and not sponsored by any platform. It’s simply a push to stop collecting ideas and start making them.
