Why We Love a Good Challenge: Stories, Tips & Inspiration

We’re thrilled to take part in the 48-Hour Challenge with Better Homes & Gardens and The Home Depot. For this event, Home Depot and BHG selected five of their favorite home and garden bloggers to design clever weekend projects for outdoor living using $500 in materials from The Home Depot. We’re honored to be included and excited to share what we create. Our friend Nicole from Making It Lovely is also participating, and since she’s refreshing her front porch too, we can’t wait to see her ideas.

We’ve already made a quick scouting trip to The Home Depot and picked up a few inspiring pieces to get started. Previously, we spruced up our porch on a tight budget using spray-painted chairs and hand-painted wood planters, but this project will bring our porch refresh to a whole new level. Some of the items we’ve grabbed are tucked away in the sunroom while we plan the build and paint projects that will keep costs low.

If you’re curious about our plan, here are a few hints: we’re installing comfortable new seating, tackling some fresh paint with clean lines, creating a small grilling or “Burger zone,” and we’ll include a quick two-minute tutorial for building a simple side table. The focus is on smart, affordable upgrades that make the porch more inviting and functional.

We’ll be documenting the whole two-day transformation, which will likely include hard work, a few sweaty moments, and hopefully tears of joy rather than frustration. Throughout April we’ll post project preparation and planning updates on BHG.com, and the full reveal will follow in early May. Check back weekly for progress reports, step-by-step DIY details, and tips to recreate these looks on your own porch.
