5 Random Tidbits You’ll Actually Want to Read

Since it’s Thursday afternoon and we’re prone to wandering off into random topics (like some old posts we’ve shared), I thought I’d toss another one onto the blog. Below are a few things you probably didn’t know about John and me. Is it proof of our oversharing tendencies? Yes. Evidence that we’re a little weird? Also yes. But we had so much fun with a “Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Us” post back in 2009 that it felt right to revisit the idea three years later.

So, without further ado, here are some random bits about us:

1. I’ve always wanted to name a band. Not to be in one or to marry a rock star — just to come up with a name. I often say something odd and exclaim, “That would make a great band name!” My favorite brainchild: “What Ever Happened To Breckin Meyer?” (I thought it sounded fun after seeing an old Road Trip trailer). Other contenders: “Exhibit A” and “Venn Diagram.” I know it’s weird, but it’s my idea of a good time. Last night I even came up with “Pass The Mustard” and I’m kind of into it.

2. We assign babies correlating animals. In a very loving and playful way. For example, Clara is a turtle and also a little bird — we see both animals in her all the time. We have about a million photos that prompt us to say “Tuuurtle!” or “It’s The Bird!” Her cousins have their own animal personas too: a chipmunk, a bear, a monkey, and a puppy. Seriously, they all have assigned animals—at least in our heads. Here’s Clara’s “angry bird” face.

3. I’m a little obsessed with Bethenny Frankel. I know she’s not everyone’s cup of tea (and honestly, I’d be a bit worried if she were), but I’ve watched every episode of The Real Housewives of New York, Bethenny Getting Married, Bethenny Ever After, and I even read her book A Place of Yes. I find the behind-the-scenes anecdotes and her candid storytelling fascinating. This might be polarizing to admit, but a few years ago after a particularly compelling episode, I told John I understood why people might get tattoos of celebrities. Yikes. What I admire most is her blunt honesty — she’ll own a mistake instead of denying it, and I find that refreshing. I even try to use that as inspiration when I start to get defensive. Bethenny Frankel is my inspiration — weird, but whatever works.

4. For nearly every day of Clara’s first six months, she peed on her dad while he changed her diaper. We’d heard that was supposed to be a “boy thing,” but from the first diaper change she let it flow. She would usually make a face that reminded us of the Dr. Evil/Mini-Me expression, which we found hilarious. Note: John didn’t always share my amusement.

5. John’s favorite comeback is “Your face.” Well, it’s probably second only to “That’s what she said,” but he uses “Your face” in response to almost anything. A real exchange that happened in our house: Sherry: “Oh man, did you leave that bag out in the car?” John: “Your face.” For some reason I laugh every time. It’s his catchphrase. If you pressed me, my go-to line is “I do what I want!” said in a faux bratty tone, even as I hand him the remote and follow up with a pouty, “Here, but only because I wanted to.” We’re dorks and proud.

Now it’s your turn. Tell me five random things, or at least one, about you. Do you put ketchup on your steak? Sing show tunes in the shower? Count stairs in your head when you climb them (I totally do most of the time)? Let’s have some Thursday afternoon bonding — share something fun or quirky about yourself.
