You may recall how much we dread painting ceilings. So you can imagine my dismay when “Repaint The Living Room Ceiling” reappeared on our to-do list. Groan.
Still, a fresh coat of white paint can transform a ceiling—especially when it has visible issues like ours did. When we moved in there were several imperfect areas. One problem showed up after we removed a large, ugly divider by the door and revealed a long unpainted stripe. In our early enthusiasm we smeared on some semi-gloss trim paint and called it finished.
Unsurprisingly, semi-gloss does not blend with flat ceiling paint—because it’s glossy and reflects light differently.

After ignoring the shiny stripe for two years, we finally mustered the energy to move the furniture out and address the issue properly. That meant repainting the entire ceiling with a flat finish to avoid a patchy result. A painter friend warned us that spot-repairing ceilings—especially white ones—rarely yields a seamless look, so painting the whole surface was the only reliable option for an even finish. The project wasn’t the quickest, but it ensured that “Repaint The Living Room Ceiling AGAIN” wouldn’t resurface for a long time.
