How One New Home Habit Saved Us Nearly $1,000 This Year

We did it — we finally cut the cable cord. Thanks to many of your suggestions, the transition went smoothly, and we’re sharing exactly how it unfolded and how much we expect to save this year. Don’t worry: Sherry still has her beloved Bravo shows. We also uncovered some surprising tidbits about a few well-known HGTV personalities and had the chance to talk to two new local stars from Richmond. Plus, we explain how we’ve managed without ceiling fans and why Sherry is loving her new favorite neckwear.

You can download the episode from iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and TuneIn Radio — or listen to it directly on this page. What’s New

Cable-cutting setup and devices

  • We’ll publish a longer, detailed post later this week that walks through our cable-cutting process step by step. Meanwhile, here’s a quick reference to the services and devices we mentioned:
    • Roku 4
    • PlayStation Vue (comparable to Sling TV)
    • Ooma Telo phone box

Quick Tip

Cleaning product tops and hanging solution

  • We weren’t able to capture a full shot of our cleaning supplies hidden in the closet (some sit in a narrow nook behind the door), so the photo shows the tops of the bottles and the hanger holes we discussed. One practical note: we needed a heavier-duty screw for the Swiffer because once filled with liquid the handle got heavier.
    • Swiffer Wet Jet
    • Bissell Pet Hair Broom
    • OXO Good Dustpan & Brush

What’s Not

  • We mentioned a fun list of “secret-ish” facts about HGTV designers — it surfaced a few surprises we hadn’t heard before, like Christina El Moussa’s prenatal yoga DVD. There were also amusing details, such as Scott McGillivray’s earlier musical pursuits.
  • And yes, you came for this — the full Property Brothers music video is included below.
  • We also talked about Joanna Gaines’ tire commercial, which we referenced during the episode.

Richmond Rehabbers

  • Don’t forget: you can catch Josh & Breese’s HGTV pilot, Richmond Rehabbers, this Sunday at Noon EST.
  • They have a portfolio of past projects featuring compelling before-and-after transformations — including several impressive kitchen makeovers.

We’re Digging

  • Sherry has been wearing a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones constantly around the house — they’re comfortable and stylish and have become her go-to accessory.

Wireless headphones

  • We also shared the exact tabletop fan we use in our bedroom. It’s a Hunter model with strong airflow; we’ve owned it for more than three years and it’s been very reliable.
  • The fan model in our daughter’s room is older and no longer sold, but we linked to the current version from the same manufacturer, which is available in multiple colors and offers a similar performance.

Psst — Looking for an item we’ve featured in an earlier episode but can’t remember which show notes to check? There’s a master list collecting everything we’ve been digging across past episodes to make that easier to find.
