Blue and White DIY Kitchen Remodel: Step-by-Step Guide and Tips

It’s no surprise we’re feeling inspired to tackle kitchen makeovers right now — honestly, we’re always up for one. Erin and Zach’s do-it-yourself remodel of their 1950s kitchen is especially relatable and motivating as we begin our own kitchen transformation. Here’s their story:

We wanted to share the redo of our 1951 kitchen (notice the charming before lamp and the heavy ceiling beam that vanished).

Lucky for us, when we pulled up the old laminate and plywood we discovered the original wood floors underneath — damaged, but salvageable. We located matching red oak pieces and repaired the missing and worn sections so the floor now blends seamlessly into the rest of the house.

One trick we used was to buy two pre-made base cabinets and join them to form a breakfast bar. We placed them side-by-side and closed one of the cabinet openings with wood trim so it looks custom and continuous.

We also kept and refreshed all the existing cabinet boxes but replaced the hardware for a modern update. Painting dozens of cabinet doors required patience — and three coats of paint — but the result was worth it. The new color is Behr Primer + Paint in Clear Pond, Eggshell.

Thanks so much for checking out our kitchen. We love it!! ~ Erin & Zach

We love it too. Congratulations on a thoughtfully executed renovation — it’s a great reminder of how much work a remodel can take, but also how dramatic the payoff is. The room now feels completely transformed.
